Contemporary  paintings of Red legged partridge and Grey partridge through
out the year in a wide range of rural landscapes and partridge shooting
scenes.

Today many of the partridge paintings are painted on commission with
scenes from shoots to birds in the landscape. If you are interested in
commissioning an original partridge work of art please contact Tim through
the art studio. You can then discuss your ideas and arrange estate visits if
required to complete field work in advance of the final painting being
developed in the studio.

UK Partridge shooting season:

The partridge shooting season lasts from October 1st to February 1st in
England, Scotland and Wales.

An Artists view of Red Legged Partridge painting and sketching

Close to the studio we have a wonderful Red legged Partridge shoot. The birds are taken over some high game cover and over a gully to the game cover on the
opposite side ( the return drive). The guns have the pegs lined up the gully and with this positioning they get birds flying directly down the length of the gully, as
well as over the gully. A fast challenging shoot and a chance for me to sketch the partridge in flight.

In addition to the local shoot the studio is positioned near some game cover which allows me the chance to study the partridge through out the year and these
birds have been a part of many of my partridge paintings.

Red Legged Partridge
The Red-legged Partridge (Alectoris rufa) is a gamebird in the pheasant family Phasianidae of the order Galliformes, gallinaceous birds. It is sometimes
known as French Partridge, to distinguish it from the Grey or English Partridge.
It is a rotund bird, with a light brown back, grey breast and buff belly. The face is white with a black gorget. It has rufous-streaked flanks and red legs. When
disturbed, it prefers to run rather than fly, but if necessary it flies a short distance on rounded wings.
This is a seed-eating species, but the young in particular take insects as an essential protein supply. The call is a three-syllable ka-chu-chu.

The Grey Partridge (Perdix perdixis) a rotund bird, 28–32 cm long, brown-backed, with grey flanks and chest. The belly is white, usually marked with a large
chestnut-brown horse-shoe mark in males, and also in many females. Hens lay up to twenty eggs in a ground nest. The nest is usually in the margin of a
cereal field, most commonly Winter wheat. The only major and constant difference between the sexes is the so-called cross of Lorraine on the tertiary coverts
of females – these being marked with two transverse bars, as opposed to the one in males. These are present after around 16 weeks of age when the birds
have moulted into adult plumage. Young Grey Partridges are mostly yellow-brown and lack the distinctive face and underpart markings. The song is a harsh
kieerr-ik, and when disturbed, like most of the gamebirds, it flies a short distance on rounded wings, often calling rick rick rick as it rises.
